What is probation victim liaison?
There are four clear tasks to be undertaken by Northamptonshire Probation Area with victims:
Protection of the victim – this applies both in respect of repeated victimisation by the offender, and further victimisation within the Criminal Justice System.
- Incorporation of victim perspectives in work with offenders
- To receive information from victims, and to transmit this to other relevant agencies where required.
- To provide information to victims.
When do we contact victims?
In cases involving serious sexual or other violent offences, where an offender is sentenced to twelve months imprisonment or more for sexual or violent offence, or any case in which an offender is sentenced to life imprisonment, it is a requirement that victims are offered contact by Northamptonshire Probation Area.
If the victim support agency is aware of additional cases in which the victim has good cause for anxiety, they may request that the local Probation Area offers contact to the victim. For more information about victim support, please click on the following link www.victimsupport.org.uk.
Why do we contact victims ?
The Probation Areas duty in work with victims is:
“to consult and notify victims about the release arrangements of all offenders convicted of a sexual or violent offence for which they receive a relevant sentence of twelve months or more”.
