Volunteers

Northants Probation Area welcome volunteers as not only do they provide links into the community but they also bring new skills and interests that can be of lasting benefit to those with whom we work

What qualities are required?

Northamptonshire Probation area look for the following qualities:

A belief that people can change
  Good communication skills
  A non-judgmental approach/open mind
  Reliability/punctuality
  Patience
  Flexibility
  Realism
  Confidence

Because of the nature of our work, we take up references and do Criminal Record Bureau and child protection checks: ALL previous convictions AND cautions must be declared. Previous offences are not necessarily a barrier, but there must be at least six months since your last court appearance or contact with us (whichever is later) before you can be considered.

If you have current or recent contact with an offender, you should also tell us, as this may affect where you should be placed within the service.

What about training?

To volunteer with the Service you will need to complete the Induction Course Ongoing development and training is also offered to all volunteers.

Working in our Offices

Recruiting volunteers is a Countywide initiative and all our volunteers are given the opportunity to work in various offices across the County. We have offices in Northampton , Kettering , Corby and Wellingborough.

Expenses

There is a system for claiming monthly expenses, e.g. for attending ongoing training sessions, or visiting people. If you have a car, it must be insured for business use.

Time and Commitment

We appreciate that many people do not have much free time, but you must be prepared to be available at least 2 hours per week for six months. We do have some volunteers who do many more hours than this, but all volunteers need to be careful not to over-commit themselves.
